Outcomes

Summary

To develop a handbook of methods for monitoring the ecological condition of aquatic and riparian systems for use by landholders and community groups.

The handbook will:

  • Provide guidelines for planning a monitoring program
  • Assist in selecting what aspects of the environment to measure
  • Provide detailed methods for monitoring a range of environmental variables
  • Include plans for constructing equipment or suppliers of equipment
  • Include data sheets for recording monitoring observations.

This project will develop a new process for engaging community groups in the design and implementation of a monitoring program and then, using feedback from the community, develop a suite of techniques that can be used by the community and natural resource managers to evaluate management activities such as environmental flows.  The final output from the project will be a manual that will capture lessons from the process and provide detailed descriptions of the actual techniques developed, their strengths and limitations.
