Summary
The Ecological Outcomes project is part of an integrated program of research in the Murray node of CSIRO Water for a Healthy Country (WfHC) aimed at developing and delivering knowledge that will improve management outcomes in the Murray Basin. The aim of the project is to quantify ecological changes to altered water management within the River Murray system and its flood dependent ecosystems. Predictive models of ecological outcomes are required to assess the relative benefits of different management strategies and help the community make more informed decisions between the consumptive use of water and the needs of the River Murray ecosystems. With this information, communities with interests in the River Murray system will be better supported in debate and negotiation over a limited resource whose value is rising rapidly and whose quality and supply can be uncertain. At individual sites, the information will inform the design of watering strategies that will maximize the ecological benefit from environmental water.
