Summary

Aquatic fungi play an important part in decomposing leaf litter that falls into streams and rivers, particularly in upland sections of rivers where water conditions allow diverse populations of aquatic fungi to grow.  Only very few studies have examined the diversity of aquatic fungi in Australian streams and non on sub-alpine or alpine streams. This project will examine the role of aquatic fungi in upland streams, concentrating on sections of a stream where there is a transition from heath lands in alpine sections to mountain ash in the sub-alpine regions of the stream.
