Research Themes
Fish Behaviour
Individual-, group- and species-level models by time-series and longitudinal data analysis. Implications for PHABSIM procedures.
Fish Conservation
Conservation of the barbel, Barbus barbus, in the River Lee (Hertfordshire, England) for riverine sport fisheries. Conservation of native fishes in the Murray-Darling Basin, in England (River Lee), and in the Czech Republic (River Danube, River Jihlava). Implementation of the UK non-native fish risk assessment strategy.
Fish Ecology
Age interpretation methodologies, including annulus and microincrement counts on calcified structures, along with bias, reproducibility and validation of age estimates; early life history, cohort composition, recruitment; survival of eggs, larvae and juveniles; ontogenetic shifts in diet, behaviour and microhabitat use.
Ecological Modelling
Intervention analysis by laboratory and field (quasi-)experiments, time-series and longitudinal data analysis; age-growth-recruitment models; implementation of generalised linear and additive models (GLMs and GAMs) of fish (micro-)habitat use; multivariate (permutational-based) statistics applied to ecology; structural equation modelling (SEM), with application to fish-habitat-biota relationships; Bayesian estimation techniques applied to mark-recapture studies.
Experimental Design
Development and implementation of the Linear Model Diagram (a graphical method for the display of factor relationships in ANOVA designs), and of a novel group of split-plot experimental designs suited to repeated measures and impact assessment studies.
