Austrovelia queenslandiae

This genus is represented in Australian freshwaters by a single species, Austrovelia queenslandiae Hungerford.

Descriptive Features:

  • head slightly longer than wide across eyes
  • three pairs of trichobothria almost equidistantly located on dorsal head surface
  • eyes spherical
  • antennae 0.7-0.9X total length of insect, flagelliform, segments 3-4 much longer and thinner than segments 1-2
  • ventral surface of head with a pair of plate-like elevated longitudinal ridges behind rostral base, gradually widened and fading towards base of head
  • rostrum extending to hind coxae or beyond
  • pronotum (apterous) subequal in length to meso-and metanotum combined
  • posterior margin of metanotum curved
  • femora moderately incrassate
  • 1st and 2nd segments of all tarsi subequal in length, 3rd segment distinctly longer
  • claws and aroliae simple
  • abdominal mediotergite 1 not subdivided
  • abdominal scent gland opening distinct, located in middle of tergite 4
  • male genital segments relatively large, dorsal hind margin of segment 8 slightly concave, proctiger simple, parameres small, shallow falciform
  • female ovipositor large, gonapophyses laciniate, strongly serrated
  • Total length: 1.2 - 1.5 mm
