Descriptive Features:

  • body usually dull coloured, forewings with pale spots
  • head elongate, distinctly extended in front of eyes
  • eyes relatively small, spherical
  • antennae long, subflagelliform, segments 1 and 2 relatively short, stout, segments 3 and 4 long, slender, segment 4 subdivided in middle by constricted, membranous zone with ring-like cuticular thickenings
  • ventral surface of head with a pair of prominent bucculae, which form a deep groove concealing the basal rostral segments
  • rostrum long, slender, usually reaching hind coxae and base of abdomen
  • pronotum relatively short, broad
  • mesoscutellum narrow, transverse
  • metanotal elevation usually subtriangular, somewhat reduced in brachypterous and micropterous adults, but never completely absent, posterior margin more or less rounded, sometimes bifid
  • legs moderately prolonged, hind leg longest
  • all tarsi 2-segmented, basal segment very small
  • Total length: 1.4 - 2.0 mm
