Notonecta handlischi

This genus is represented in Australian freshwaters by a single species, Notonecta handlischi Kirkaldy.

Descriptive Features:

  • head narrower than pronotum
  • eyes large, kidney-shaped, inner margins of eyes converging posteriorly in dorsal view, but widely separated from each other
  • pronotum broader than long, antero-lateral margins not foveate
  • antennae 4-segmented
  • ventral margin of mid femur with a pointed process before apex and sometimes also one basally
  • fore and mid tarsi 3-segmented (basal segment very small), hind tarsi 2-segmented
  • male genital capsule divided by a cleft into an anterior and a posterior lobe, parameres symmetrical, situated in cleft
  • female with short gonapophyses
  • Total length: 10 - 10.5 mm
