Dr Gavin Rees - Microbial Ecologist




Gavin Rees is a microbiologist  based at the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre in Wodonga, Victoria, Australia.

His main research area of responsibility is microbial ecology and his research topics of special interest include:

  • Microbial ecology
  • Carbon and nutrient processes
  • Microbial community structures
  • River ecology


Gavin has held positions at:

  • Monash University
  • Canberra University

For the last 18 years, Gavin has been based at The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre where he has worked on many projects involving microbial processes.

Academic qualifications

  • D.Phil University of Waikato, under the supervision of Dr Chris Harfoot. Thesis Titled "Studies on sulfate-reducing bacteria and an agarolytic bacterium" 1988
  • M.Sc. University of Waikato, under the supervision of Dr Chris Harfoot Thesis Titled "Isolation and characterization of sulfate-reducing bacteria from an Antarctic lake" 1984
