Dr Rick Stoffels - Animal Ecologist

Rick Stoffels is a CSIRO Senior Scientist based at The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre in Wodonga/Mildura, Victoria, Australia.

His main research area of responsibility is fish biology.

Dr Stoffels’ topics of special interest include:

  • Functional ecology of freshwater fish—how the physiology of a species influences its fitness in changing environments
  • Models to support management of freshwater fishes

Rick joined the MDFRC in September 2007. He is interested in the role models (from conceptual to mathematical) play in improving our understanding of complex biological systems, and how they may improve our ability to manage ecosystems.

Since joining the MDFRC he has developed a strong interest in how temperature, dissolved oxygen and nutrients affect the productivity of freshwater fish. He is also interested in general models of fish community viability in riverine landscapes.
